Ready or Not Movie Review

Have you ever thought… what if you get married one day (assuming you are single) and find out you’ve married in a dysfunctional family AFTER, yes, after, the wedding? Your partner-now-spouse gave you hints before the actual wedding, but you dismissed it, and now you’re trapped in the middle of a deadly game with your new in-laws. Ready or Not is a horror comedy movie about a woman named Grace, who finds herself in this exact nightmare after marrying into the wealthy Le Domas family.

I watched this movie a few weeks ago since it was recently added to Netflix. I’m just not sure if it’s also available on other streaming services. And so I figured, why not write a review about it? After all, I’ve got a few cents to share about the film.

Ready or Not Cast

The movie is directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. The cast, well, I wouldn’t say it’s star-studded or something in that sense but the chemistry of the characters is there. Samara Weaving did most of the lifting, because girl, she’s definitely a treat to watch. Here’s the cast of the film:

  • Samara Weaving as Grace Le Domas
  • Adam Brody as Daniel Le Domas
  • Mack O’Brien as Alex Le Domas
  • Andie MacDowell as Becky Le Domas
  • Henry Czemy as Tony Le Domas
  • Nicky Guadagni as Helene Le Domas
  • Elyse Levesque as Charity Le Domas
  • Melanie Scrofano as Emilie Le Domas

What’s Ready or Not About?

As I’ve said earlier, it’s about a wealthy family who has this weird tradition of playing a game at midnight whenever a new member joins the family. There’s a box of cards containing different games. Grace must pick a card so they can play the game. Unfortunately, she got the hide-and-seek, which of course, for normal people like us, is a fun, harmless game to kill time. Grace had no idea what she was in for, so she just did her best to hide.

The mansion had CCTVs all around and I’m also assuming they have exceptional wireless service, because… well, they’re rich. Okay so, during the game, the family members aren’t allowed to use the CCTV room to make it fair for both parties.

When one family member killed someone in an accident thinking it was Grace, Alex grabbed the opportunity to go to Grace and let her know what’s happening. Saying stuff like his family isn’t normal, they’re trying to find her to kill her, and the whole truth. Of course, it devastated Grace, but she had to play in order to survive. The next parts of the story? I wouldn’t want to spoil but I’ll leave it to you to find out if you haven’t yet.

My Thoughts about Ready or Not

I honestly enjoyed the film even though it’s not the usual movie I watch. The story is entertaining, the cinematography is great, although there could be room for some improvements, especially in certain action sequences where the pacing felt a bit rushed. Most of the characters lacked depth, so I couldn’t really connect to any of them. I’m not sure if it was intentional, as the story is focused on Grace and her survival, but it won’t hurt to give other characters a bit of spotlight, at least for me.

Ready or Not has been recently added on Netflix, but I hope it becomes available on other streaming platforms and airs on DISH TV and others. It’s a great movie to watch, especially if you’re just looking for a film that can entertain you and your family.

Final Thoughts

I would rate Ready or Not a solid 7/10. It’s entertaining, a bit funny, and suspenseful. It surely had its ups and downs throughout the movie, but it’s not that bad to skip. I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a movie to watch on Netflix. If you ever watch it, please let me know what you think! Happy streaming!
