Now well into its second decade, GRIMMFEST continues to draw a huge community of genre film fans, press and guests to Manchester (UK) and was recently named as one of the best genre film festivals in the world by MOVIE MAKER MAGAZINE and by website DREAD CENTRAL Grimmfest is also a member of the prestigious Melies International festival federation.

The first film of the day was Itch!, a zombie apocalypse film from the US. “It was an interesting take on [the] infection apocalypse that I’ve not really seen done like that before.” Dylan, a festival attendee remarked. Fellow attendee Lucy highlighted the alternative perspective on horror as one of the reasons she has returned to the festival.

On this afternoon was I See The Demon about a birthday party that descends into an end-worlding nightmare and Landlord depicted how ghoulish landlords can be. Both films were followed by Q&As with the writer-directors as well as production and costume designer Ashely Cook and cast members Alexis Zollicoffer, Noah Kershisnik and Mac Steele Foster from I See The Demon.

“Something I really like about the UK is that you take film in theatre very seriously. Zollicoffer on the warm reception from the attendees. “We have absolutely loved being here.” Foster observes that genre festivals offer a different experience. “You know that people are here for this.”

“Very humbling to hear that people are so excited about it, especially this far away.” writer-director of Landlord Remington Smith enthuses. “I feel like this is a good fit for our movie in terms of people who are being scrappy and fighting against larger forces at play.”

GrimmFest also has a festival hub and market for merchandise. There are competitions and raffles to be won. Attendees can enjoy a discount on food and drink from GrimmFest’s partners within the Great Northern such as The Lion’s Den and The Mews.

The evening concludes with a programme of short films, beginning with Awkward, a film on the societal pressures within romantic and platonic relationships. Showings for the rest of the weekend include sold out Rabbit Trap, Deviant and Wormtown.
