A visceral debut eco-horror novel about survival, secrets, and strange creatures in the Australian outback
Wolverine Frogs, the debut horror novel from Australian author Holly Scott, is now available in print and digital formats. Inspired by real-life creatures and ancient folklore, this gripping story blurs the lines between eco-horror, climate fiction, and dark mythology.
Set in a dystopian version of the Australian bush where wildlife and human lives collide, Wolverine Frogs draws its name and inspiration from a bizarre real species of frog that breaks its own bones to survive. The novel explores what it means to adapt—or to become monstrous—when faced with a dying world.
“I was fascinated by how brutal and beautiful nature can be,” says author Holly Scott. “The frogs were a metaphor, sure—but they were also just plain horrifying in the coolest way possible.”
The book follows Lara, a young woman searching for her missing sister. She must survive a landscape haunted by memory, myth, and something darker than either.
Part eco-fable, part folk horror, Wolverine Frogs will appeal to fans of Karen Russell, Mariana Enríquez, and Annihilation-era Jeff VanderMeer. The novel also serves as a love letter to Scott’s rural upbringing, infused with a deep respect for animals, the land, and the ghost stories we tell to protect both.
Wolverine Frogs is available now via Amazon. Review copies and interviews available upon request.

The Hairy Frog: A Unique Amphibian
The hairy frog (Trichobatrachus robustus), also known as the horror frog or Wolverine frog, is one of the most fascinating amphibians in the world. Native to Central Africa, particularly in countries like Cameroon, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea, this frog gets its name from the hair-like structures that males develop during the breeding season. These “hairs” are actually dermal papillae, which are rich in blood vessels and help the frog absorb oxygen from the water, aiding in respiration while it guards its eggs.
One of the most bizarre features of the hairy frog is its ability to break its own bones to produce claws. When threatened, the frog contracts muscles in its toes, causing sharp bone fragments to pierce through the skin, creating temporary claws. This extreme defense mechanism, reminiscent of the fictional character Wolverine, helps the frog fend off predators. However, this process is likely painful and leaves the frog vulnerable to infections afterward.
Hairy frogs inhabit fast-flowing rivers and streams in rainforests, where they feed on insects, small fish, and other invertebrates. Males are highly territorial during mating season, using their “hairs” to enhance oxygen intake while they remain submerged, protecting their eggs from rivals.
Despite their remarkable adaptations, hairy frogs face threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and hunting, as they are considered a delicacy in some regions. Conservation efforts are necessary to protect this unique species and its ecosystem. The hairy frog’s extraordinary traits make it a subject of scientific curiosity and a striking example of nature’s ingenuity.
