A Christmas Thank You to the Heart of Horror

As the fairy lights twinkle and the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting in the glow of my monitor, surrounded by the spectral company of all things macabre and wonderful. To every single contributor, dedicated reader, and wonderful horror human who has shared, appeared, or ventured through the digital pages of Ginger Nuts of Horror this year, thank you from the bottom of my recovering heart. Merry Christmas.

This message arrives accompanied by a deeply personal note, one that I genuinely feel compelled to share with this incredibly supportive and understanding community. To be completely honest, this past year has been by far the most challenging and difficult period of my entire life. My long-standing and ongoing battle with chronic pain, which is caused by severe bone erosion in my hands, has proven to be a relentless and unforgiving antagonist. Every single typed review, every carefully edited article, has been a significant physical act of sheer willpower and determination, constantly reminding me of a body that at times feels as if it is working actively against me.

This year also saw me make one of the hardest, yet most necessary, decisions of my life: leaving the job I had held for 25 years. The toxic, bullying culture fostered by the store manager and regional manager had become untenable, chipping away at my resolve long before my breaking point.

The experience left me with a form of professional PTSD, where the mere thought of that environment could trigger deep anxiety. In a leap of faith, I moved to a new company to work the night shift, a change that has been nothing short of perfect for me. The quiet hours, the autonomy, and the absence of that corrosive atmosphere have been profoundly healing, creating a peaceful space for me to rebuild both my mental health and my passion for our horror community.

And then, in August, the cumulative weight of it all, the pain, the frustration, the sheer exhaustion, catalysed a mental breakdown. I stepped back, and the curtain fell. For a while, the future wasn’t just unclear; it felt like a closed book. As Frank Turner put it, it felt like I was “putting miles and years on the road just to see how far I’d get from the moment I hit the deck.”

But here’s the balance, the bright light piercing through the thick gloom, and this is exactly where each and every one of you comes in. To the magnificent, sprawling heart of the horror community itself: you are more than an audience; you are a sanctuary. Your messages weren’t just comments on a screen. They were lifelines tossed into the dark. You proved that our shared love for the eerie, the unsettling, and the monstrous is, paradoxically, one of the most human and compassionate forces there is. You are the proof that true kindness often wears the clever disguise of a creepy-crawly.

To my stalwart, incredibly talented team of reviewers and writers: you are the bedrock of this site. When I faltered, you didn’t just keep the lights on; you threw a raucous, brilliant party in the dark. You stepped up with incredible content, unwavering support, and a belief in this weird little corner of the internet that humbled me completely. You are the reason the ‘Nuts’ in Ginger Nuts of Horror stands for resilience, not just crunchiness (though we do aim to be a tough cookie that occasionally crumbles in the right places!).

To every dedicated reader, sharer, and commenter: you are the purpose. Every click, every share, every “this creeped me out” is the reason we do this. You create the conversation, you build the buzz, and you form the wonderfully strange family that gathers here. You’ve shown that passion is a participatory sport, and you’ve all earned MVP status.

This amazing community, your heartfelt messages, and the truly incredible work you all sent in to keep the site alive when I couldn’t were absolutely part of my lifeline. It reminded me, in the deepest way, that passion and genuine connection are among the most potent medicines we can ever have.

So, I’m writing this not from the depths, but from the climb. Mentally, I am firmly on the way to recovery. The work is hard, but it’s work worth doing. “I’ve finally decided to future,” to borrow another perfect line, and I can honestly say I feel like a new man emerging. Perhaps a little battered, certainly wiser, and filled with a profound gratitude. “And I’m trying to get better, because I haven’t been my best.” The journey continues, but the direction is now forward and upward. As Frank Turner sings, “we can get better because we’re not dead yet.”

None of this would have been possible without you. To the writers who entrusted us with their words, the authors and publishers who shared their dark creations, the artists who chilled us with their visions, and to every reader who clicked, commented, and shared, you didn’t just keep a website running. You kept a spirit alive. You provided a purpose and a world to return to.

And in the spirit of festive inclusivity, I must even extend a nod to our most stubbornly oppositional readers: the evil Slomanites who still, against all reason and sugary evidence, proclaim their hatred for the divine coffee cream chocolate. Your continued, villainous dissent adds a delightful spice to our community mix, a necessary dash of bitter to balance the sweet. We salute your terrible taste with a shudder, and a coffee cream hurled in your general direction.

Ginger Nuts of Horror is, and always will remain, a shining testament to the fact that the horror community is truly the kindest, most supportive group of wonderfully unique misfits on the entire planet. Time and again, you prove beyond doubt that a deep love and passion for all things dark and eerie can actually serve as a brilliantly bright and uplifting light in the world.

So this Christmas, I raise a metaphorical glass (my hands might complain if I hold a real one for too long, much like a ginger nut biscuit fears a vigorous dunk!). Here’s to you. Here’s to the stories that unsettle us, the reviews that guide us, and the shared love that connects us all.

Thank you so much for being an essential part of our wonderfully strange and delightfully spooky family. We truly appreciate your presence and support throughout the year. Wishing you a peaceful and joyful festive season, filled with warmth and happiness. May the coming New Year bring you magnificent, terrifying, and outstanding moments of horror that captivate and thrill you beyond your wildest dreams.

With immense gratitude and hope,

Jim
