Great British Horror 10: Something Peculiar Review | A Final Chilling Anthology

Great British Horror 10- Something Peculiar Review | A Final Chilling Anthology HORROR BOOK REVIEW

Every great era must come to an end, and so it is with a tinge of bittersweet anticipation that we approach the final volume of the acclaimed series with Great British Horror 10. Edited by the prolific Steve J. Shaw, this collection, titled “Something Peculiar”, serves as a fitting farewell, trading in graphic shocks for a more refined and lingering sense of dread.

As reviewer Mario Guslandi confirms, this anthology specialises in the art of subtle disquiet, assembling eleven brand-new stories that get under your skin rather than spill their contents. It’s a celebration of atmospheric terror, and within its pages, you’ll find masterful works from acclaimed authors like John Langan and Mark Morris, as well as compelling pieces from talents like Marian Womack and Emma J. Gibbon. This review delves into the standout tales that make this final volume a must-read for connoisseurs of intelligent, character-driven horror.

Now at number 10, this excellent series of horror anthologies is going to end, only to be replaced by a new series, also edited by the very active Steve Shaw.

The present volume assembles eleven brand new stories apt to subtly disquiet the reader (no graphic horror here, thanks God)

Among the various contributions, I will briefly mention the ones that especially impressed me as a reader.
“The Way Through the Woods” by Marian Womack is the perceptive portrait of a songwriter in search of inspiration who takes a vacation with her family and have to deal with unexpected, worrisome events.
John Langan provides “Acolytes of the Famished Giants” is a masterful piece of dark fiction set during a family reunion where surprising, disquieting events take place.

Emma J Gibbon provides ” 7 Encounters with Peculiar Hawkins”, indeed a peculiar piece of fiction, extremely entertaining, featuring an unusual woman and her endless transformations. “Confetti” by Mark Morris is a deeply disturbing story describing the consequences of moving into a house where an undesirable host still lingers.

The remaining stories are well worth reading and it’s up to you to discover them. Good luck to the Editor with his new venture. We are all looking forward to it.
