The Silence Between the Shadows by Dario Fero

The Silence Between the Shadows HORROR FEATURE ARTICLE

The Silence Between the Shadows by Dario Fero

Not all horrors are born in violence and screams. They do not announce themselves, but slip unnoticed into the room like dusk. They leave no bloodstains, no fingerprints on doorknobs. As if nothing had ever passed by. Children are often accused of having too much imagination, especially the kind their parents themselves lack. Until they too discover that something waits, patient in a corner – and realize too late that it has always been there.

We fear what can be named: poltergeists, witches, the man with the axe. But what about the things we never see? Those for which no words exist? The ones that never make it to the tongue, passed only in glances – causing adults to be seized again by that same unearthly feeling they knew as children, when a strange silence fell over the room.

Silence is not merely the absence of sound, but the presence of something that must not be spoken. It lodges itself in a familiar face that suddenly feels strange, though you cannot say why. I remember an old family photograph where everyone stood smiling around an empty chair. Later, all were convinced that someone had been sitting there when the picture was taken, but no one could recall who it was.

As a child, in my attic room, I sometimes thought something was breathing beside me, even with all the windows shut. In the morning I would see little clouds of breath in a place where no one had been.
“That child has such an imagination,” Maria from the corner shop told my mother. But my mother worried. The doctor spoke of a predisposition to psychosis. In another century they might have locked me away.

In stories we tend to fill every gap, to close every door. But it is the open door – the one that leads into darkness – that lingers. There are things you cannot explain: the dog that suddenly barks hysterically, the cat that freezes and stares at what isn’t there. The collective silence surrounding events for which no one finds the right words. That is why a good horror story is not a closed circle, but a wound that festers and never fully heals.

The uncanny lies in what remains unsaid. It asks only patience – the willingness to sit with what we do not understand, even when the clock suddenly stops ticking, when footsteps are heard though no one appears, and when coldness is felt where no chill should be – as if the darkness ends in an abyss.

Perhaps the purest fear does not lie in the monster on the threshold, but in the realization that the threshold itself has vanished – and that we have already stepped across it.

For Ever and a Day: the shadow side of immortality by Dario Fero

Dario Fero

For Ever and a Day is a literary vampire novel unlike any other — a quiet, haunting descent into memory, identity, and the slow erosion of time.

Told through the fragmented reflections of an ancient, nameless being, the story explores what it means to endure, to forget, and to remember again. Rather than bloodshed and horror, it offers melancholic musings on love, decay, artificial intelligence, and the ghosts we carry within us.

The language is poetic. The tone is philosophical. The world is fading.

If you’re drawn to gothic fiction, introspective horror, or speculative tales that defy genre and linger long after the final page, this book was written — or perhaps received — for you.
