Between Light and Shadow By Dario Fero

About: A reflection on the process of shaping For Ever and a Day – a gothic, philosophical work exploring memory, identity, and the shadow side of immortality.
When it comes to the supernatural, there are believers and disbelievers. The latter are the luckier of the two. Not because they are right, but because fate has spared them the misfortune that forces believers to acknowledge the existence of another world. They are often wrongly seen as naïve, frivolous, or superstitious. In truth, it’s a luxury to stand on the safe side – though one could argue you may be missing the most intriguing part of life.
The occult prefers to exist in shadow. It does not thrive in the full glare of light. That is why, in today’s overexposed world, it sometimes seems to have vanished. But make no mistake: wherever sunlight does not reach, there are those waiting for the day darkness returns. And that day may be closer than we think.
Some stories don’t arrive by request. They come like a sound in the distance, a shape in the mist – something that insists on being followed, even when you don’t yet know why. For Ever and a Day is such a story. This gothic, philosophical novel is not a conventional horror tale – blood is rarely spilled – but for that very reason, it lingers under the skin.
I began without knowing where it would lead, and soon realised it was not about finding answers, but about preserving the questions.
The old being that emerged in the notes fascinated me – the almost grotesque way it looked at time, memory, and the weight of enduring. It has no name, no reflection, no fixed place in history – and yet it speaks with a voice that observes, questions, and records the incomprehensible.
The writing process was slow and painstaking. The undated notes felt like a riddle without a key. Arranging them was the work of a monk. I made it a point of honour to rewrite not only the sentences, but also the silences. Some passages consist more of what is unsaid than what is written, precisely because that is where the unknown remains untouched.
This being does not see the world as humans do. It seeks the frayed edges of conversation, studies the slow distortion of memory, and mistrusts the moments when reality falters. In these pages, unease does not enter through blood or violence, but through what remains unspoken.
Dario Fero is the name I adopted long ago for assignments like this. Not to hide, but to work in anonymity – and to protect the people I care for. I do not see myself as the author, but as an archivist, a collector of eternal thoughts. At times, it feels as though the being created me, as part of a silent pact.
What drew me most this time was the journey it takes: from stillness to movement, from resignation to an unusual, tender love that overcomes despair. This is not romance, but a love expressed in protection, in the recognition of each other’s shadows – between beings who long ago moved beyond the human. However dark one may be, it is always love that sets things in motion again.
The unknown resists being named. As the being says: “Name it too soon, and it slips away like mist.” What it leaves unnamed, we as readers must fill in ourselves – making the unknown a mirror for our own fears and desires.
Perhaps that is the true pull of this work: that it does not merely expose fear, but also the longing for connection. It reminds us that we will pass – in our case, perhaps sooner rather than later – and that in this realisation lies the immeasurable value of living, of loving, and of continuing to tell stories.

For Ever and a Day: the shadow side of immortality by Dario Fero
For Ever and a Day is a literary vampire novel unlike any other — a quiet, haunting descent into memory, identity, and the slow erosion of time.
Told through the fragmented reflections of an ancient, nameless being, the story explores what it means to endure, to forget, and to remember again. Rather than bloodshed and horror, it offers melancholic musings on love, decay, artificial intelligence, and the ghosts we carry within us.
The language is poetic. The tone is philosophical. The world is fading.
If you’re drawn to gothic fiction, introspective horror, or speculative tales that defy genre and linger long after the final page, this book was written — or perhaps received — for you.
