I’ve been a regular contributor to Gingernutsofhorror.com for a number of years, now. It’s not an exaggeration to say: The experience has not only been a gateway into numerous horror communities, but has also introduced me to people I now consider to be extremely close friends (amongst which I certainly count Jim).
The site has always been a frank and open forum for discussion, a place where horror in all its forms, mediums and manifestations can be explored. From a personal perspective, it has been very kind to host my particular species of long-form, obsessive rambling on the matter in numerous series and ongoing projects (the latest of which is My Life in Horror, inherited from fellow contributor and friend, But Power).
During that time, Jim and the sire itself have been nothing less than encouraging, enthusiastic and essential to work with. I often find myself suffering degrees of “imposter syndrome” among my contemporaries, especially when it comes to my writing, but Jim has provided platform, promotion and endless encouragement in that regard.
The site is a rare chorus of voices in horror communities, hailing from a range of backgrounds and traditions, representing numerous -historically marginalised- identities. Jim has always been a stalwart advocate for said voices (my own included), often hosting special seasons on the site for the purposes of representation (which has, of course, become all the more necessary in the current global climate).
I’ve always been deeply impressed by Jim’s willingness to host so many -sometimes conflicting- voices, not to mention his willingness to take stands against injustice, bigotry and abuse, even if doing so rune the risk of alienating certain quarters.
Gingernutsofhorror has thus become one of those rarest of things: Not just a hub of enthusiasts or hobbyists, but a genuine and sincere sanctuary, a platform of safety and representation at a time when such are essential.
It has been my honour and pleasure to be part of the project and I look forward to being so for many moons into the future.
