Hellatherapist Review: A Psychological Thriller Where Trauma Meets Revenge

She entered the asylum to heal the hopelessly insane—only to discover the monster who butchered her family twenty years ago has been holding a seat for her.(HELLATHERAPIST is a single novel available in multiple formats. Cover art varies by edition. Content is identical.)

Hellatherapist Review: A Psychological Thriller Where Trauma Meets Revenge

Knott creates a world where the exploiter becomes the exploited and trust is a mere commodity for manipulation.

Knott, a licensed psychologist, demonstrates myriad responses and reactions to mental trauma, from the traditional repression and dissociation to the futuristic reconsideration of the ‘brain in the jar’ sci-fi trope.

Odette is neglected and abused in early childhood, and her adoptive family is victims of a brutal attack. The help she receives from Dr Trinity sets her trajectory to study psychology, to enter a career path destined to help those abandoned and misunderstood.

But at the heart of this novella is manipulation, self-indulgence and subterfuge. Nothing can be trusted; the narrative twists and turns to shield you from the truth (although you might just figure it out).

I would have really appreciated a stronger, more vivid sense of setting, especially during the key moments in the story where the anticipated tension didn’t quite come through as fully as it should. At times, the descriptions felt more like simple stage directions rather than immersive, detailed scenes that truly draw the reader in and build suspense.

While there are visceral descriptions, I wouldn’t define this within the splatterpunk/extreme sub-genre, which could limit its readership scope. So, if you don’t mind some descriptive gore within a psychological narrative, this might just be for you.

Trish has been reading horror from a hideously young age, bypassing Goosebumps and heading straight to her mother’s Stephen King collection; those well-loved tattered and thumbed paperbacks still retain pride of place on her bookshelf.  Trish reads widely across the genre, particularly works published by independent authors and small presses – a predilection that led to her establishing the UK based Indie Horror Chapter to provide a platform for the vast array of talented indie authors from the UK and Europe to showcase their work.   In addition to King, Herbert and Poe, Trish lists ML Rayner, Matt Shaw, Douglas Hackle and Ash Ericmore as her ‘must read’ authors.
