Seven Indian Zombie Films Are in the Pipeline, and the Genre Is No Longer a Novelty
At least seven distinct Indian zombie projects are currently in various stages of development or production, spanning Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, and ranging in tone from a near-future survival thriller headlined by Ranveer Singh to a TVF campus horror-comedy marking a YouTube star’s feature debut. According to Hindustan Times, filmmakers across the industry are experimenting with the undead and giving the genre a distinctly Indian register. The breadth of that effort, taken together, is difficult to dismiss as coincidence.
A Seven-Title Wave and the Evenings It Will Need to Win
The editorial team at Live Sports Odds tracks the weekly leisure calendar closely enough to recognize when a genre is making a serious claim on audience time. A slate that stretches from Pralay’s near-future pandemic drama to the campus horror of College Fest represents a genuine range of entry points for fans, but it also represents a scheduling reality. Viewers mapping out a zombie watchlist are working with the same finite evenings they already divide among competing pastimes, and those same fans often keep half an eye on live sports odds as they plan their week, with the week’s matchups pulling on the nights that a new undead title is also trying to win.
“When you’re looking at seven films across three languages and at least three distinct tones,” the Live Sports Odds team noted, “the question stops being whether Indian audiences want zombie cinema and starts being how many of these films can land at the right moment in a calendar that never really empties out.”
Ranveer Singh and Kartik Aaryan Anchor the Bollywood Side
The most high-profile entry is Pralay, starring Ranveer Singh opposite Kalyani Priyadarshan and directed by Jai Mehta. Set in a near-future Mumbai devastated by a deadly pandemic and a subsequent zombie outbreak, the film is actively in production. No official release date has been announced, but the shoot’s confirmed status puts it ahead of several rivals on this list.
Kartik Aaryan’s untitled project presents a different picture. Directed by Vishnuvardhan, who also helmed Shershaah, the film has generated industry attention but remains unconfirmed in key respects. An unnamed source quoted by Pinkvilla described the situation in terms that conveyed enthusiasm without guaranteeing momentum.
“The filmmaker has developed a unique Zombie Film, and Kartik loved the world created by Vishnu. He has given his green signal to the project and is tentatively looking to take the film on floors in July 2026.”
That window has passed without a confirmed shoot start, and no official announcement has followed.
Comedy, Campus Horror, and Cross-Language Experiments Fill Out the Slate
The rest of the incoming wave is where the genre’s tonal ambition becomes clearest. College Fest, directed by Vaibhav Bandhoo and produced by TVF, is built around the premise of college students turned into zombies by a mysterious infection. The film marks the feature debut of Ashish Chanchlani, one of India’s most-followed YouTubers, and also reportedly features Rhea Chakraborty and fellow creator Purav Jha. No release date has been announced, but the project represents an explicit attempt to bring an audience that grew up on digital content into a theatrical horror-comedy format.
In Telugu, Zombie Reddy 2-NxtLvl continues the story begun with Zombie Reddy in 2021. Teja Sajja returns as the lead under director Suparn S Varma, whose credits include The Family Man 2 and Rana Naidu. The sequel also marks Shanaya Kapoor’s debut in Telugu cinema and is set to release next year.
Tamil cinema brings its own entry through Bang Bang, a horror-action-comedy directed by Sam Rodrigues and starring Prabhu Deva. The film reunites Prabhu Deva with comedian Vadivelu after 25 years, a pairing that previously appeared in Manadhai Thirudivittai, Kaathala Kaathala, and Mr Romeo. Bang Bang is set to release this year.
Two Projects Still Waiting for Confirmed Ground
The longest-delayed entry on the list is Go Goa Gone 2, the sequel to the 2013 cult zombie comedy. Officially announced in January 2020, the sequel was initially planned for a March 2021 release. That date came and went without explanation, and the project has seen no significant public update since. The original film starred Kunal Kemmu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari, and Saif Ali Khan, and interest in a follow-up has never fully faded.
Kemmu himself has been vocal about his enthusiasm. Speaking to ANI about the prospect of reuniting with the cast and taking on a larger role behind the camera, he was direct.
“I’d love to work with him again, and honestly, if they ask me to direct a sequel, I would love to make it.”
The other project in uncertain territory involves Tiger Shroff in a zombie comedy being developed by producer Firoz Nadiadwala and director Ahmed Khan. Reports have placed Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar in discussions to reprise their Welcome franchise characters Majnu bhai and Uday Shetty respectively, a combination that would give the film a built-in comedic frame. The project, however, remains in early stages, with no confirmed cast, storyline, or timeline.
Both Go Goa Gone 2 and the Tiger Shroff project sit at the far end of the certainty spectrum. Neither has a shoot date, a locked cast, or a release window. What they do have is existence as named, announced ideas in a moment when the genre has enough momentum to keep them plausible. That queue of ideas, stretching from a film already shooting to concepts still waiting for their first confirmed day on set, is itself the story. Indian zombie cinema has moved from novelty to a sustained creative conversation, and the industry’s appetite for entries shows no sign of contracting.
