As the book progresses, we meet many more unique characters and life events, all representing some form of rot, such as Barra wanting to cleanse the dirtiness that is the rot that consumes him. Barra is in a state of sadness. Which he soon learns is a sadness within us as a whole society. He feels dirty seeing all the rot. He tries to cleanse himself, according to Barra, nobody else sees the rot… so is there rot to begin with? Soul Scrubber has visions of violent crime. Nobody believed in his visions. The visions destroyed his life. Now living one day at a time, in agony for the choices he had made. “Darkness massed in corners, invading without mercy. He wished the pot would swallow him before it was too late.” The rot of crime and the toll it takes on society and our personal lives.
