Vic Kerry wakes up in I Know What You Did Last Summer—and he's not scared. Between crushing on Jennifer Love Hewitt and exploiting Ben the Fisherman's terrible wardrobe choices for a heat stroke victory, this horror interview template gets weird. Plus: why Velma needs Dr. House and Geordi La Forge.

Vic Kerry Is Stuck in A Horror Franchise

One writer’s case for surviving Ben the Fisherman, becoming Velma, and rewriting giallo history.

Vic Kerry Is Stuck in A Horror World

You wake up in a horror franchise. What do you do? Vic Kerry has answers, and most of them involve 1997, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and a fisherman in a rubber slicker. This horror interview template asks the important questions: which villain would you actually survive, what creature terrifies you most, and who are you in Scooby Doo? Kerry makes a compelling case for Ben the Fisherman going down via North Carolina humidity. No supernatural nonsense. Just heat stroke, bad costume choices, and a deep love for giallo slashers. No one’s running from Michael Myers here. They’re waiting for the fisherman to pass out.

You wake up and find yourself in a horror franchise, what franchise would you prefer to wake up in and why?

If I woke up in a horror franchise and could be 1997 Vic Kerry, I would go for I Know What You Did Last Summer. I know what people are probably saying, “That’s a horrible franchise to wake up in.” Hear me out. In 1997, I had a huge crush on Jennifer Love Hewitt. I’m pretty sure lots of people did too. The whole reason I would want to be in that movie is simply to be in her presence.

The movie also has a really good soundtrack. I don’t know if characters in a movie can hear the soundtrack playing while the mayhem is happening, but if that can, I Know What You Did Last Summer’s slapped.

You find yourself as the “Final One”  which monster / villain would you most like to go up against ands why do you think you would survive?

I’m sticking with I Know What You Did Last Summer. Ben the Fisherman is the perfect villain to go up against.

He’s not supernatural. There is no worries of him popping up in my dreams or materializing out of thin air. If you shoot him, he’ll be mortally wounded, unlike some other slasher villains. (Cough, Cough, I’m looking at you Michael Myers.)

Ben is very focused on vengeance. That makes people sloppy. They ignore obvious ways of killing people for more elaborate plans. The more steps to a plan, the more ways it can go wrong.

The ultimate reason I’m choosing Ben the Fisherman is that he wears a heavy rubber slicker, boots, and hat in the middle of July in North Carolina. One of the most unrealistic parts of this movie is that so many fishermen are wearing those coats and hats on the Fourth of July in North Carolina. I’m from the South. No one is wearing something that heavy day or night in the middle of summer. The humidity is way too high. I know I could beat Ben the Fisherman because I’ll just keep moving around outside in the 75° F (24°C) 62% humidity night. Eventually, he’s going to kill over from a heat stroke.

Of all the dumb things slasher killers do in movies, he might be the dumbest by running around in the coat.

(Fun Fact: I actually have a heavy rain slick and rubber boots I wear in the winter to walk my dog in the rain. I’ve almost bought a hook at Halloween to carry in the pocket and wave a drivers when they go by too fast while out walking my pup.)

And which creature would you least like to go up against?

Bruce from Jaws. I’m sure there needs to be any discussion as to why. It ate a boat. If a shark can eat a boat, what chance do I have?

You find yourself in Scooby Doo, which character are you, and who would most like to have as the other members of Mystery Inc?

I think I’m Velma. I wear glasses. I can’t see without my glasses. How am I not Velma? (As I type this, I’m wearing an orange shirt.)

Since the monsters in Scooby Doo aren’t real, I would want a character who was good at figuring out real world mysteries. I think an excellent edition would be Dr. House, as long as it’s not a Lupus Monster. Geordi La Forge from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Pinhead pops round for an evening of fun, what are you pains and pleasures?

This is definitely my least favorite horror movie franchise. I do not like Hellraiser at all. But I really love how it feels to get a deep massage on an extremely sore muscle. That’s my delicious pain, Pinhead.

The Wishmaster gives you three wishes

1.  You can wish to write in any franchise
2. You can wipe on franchise from the minds of everyone
3. You can date your horror crush.

What do you chose?

It’s not really a franchise but a sub-genre. I’d love to write giallo. They are my favorite slashers not because they make a lot of sense, but because they are so stylistic.

The Poison Ivy Street Library (The Coffinwood Chronicles Book 1)

by V. M. Kerry (Author), Shelly Collins (Illustrator)

Book 1 of 1: The Coffinwood Chronicles

Vic Kerry

Jeremiah moved to Coffinwood with his family so his parents could work at the town’s casket factory. On his way to the park, a lightning storm blows up, leading him to seek refuge in the nearest building: The Poison Ivy Street Library.

Inside he finds a gloomy maze of dusty bookshelves, rustling pages, and Dedgar Wormworm, the creepy librarian. With no other option but to ride out the storm inside the library, Jeremiah reads three books given to him by Dedgar. Each book seems a little too real, and Dedgar seems a little too anxious for him to read them all.

As the storm rages on, Jeremiah learns that in the Poison Ivy Street Library, the stories don’t end when you close the cover. Sometimes that is just the beginning of terror.
